Market update: navigating the current Middle East tensions

You will have seen recent headlines about rising tensions in the Middle East, particularly the renewed standoff between the United States and Iran over the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump has issued a 48-hour deadline for Iran to fully reopen the Strait, and Iran has responded with its own threats of retaliation. Energy markets have reacted quickly, and this has created short-term volatility across global investment markets.

Although the situation sounds dramatic, it’s important not to assume that events will continue escalating. Both the US and Iran have strong incentives to find a route towards deescalation rather than allowing the conflict to drag on. Much of the recent rhetoric is likely to be aimed at gaining negotiating leverage, and we expect greater clarity once the US decides how to respond to its own deadline.

What this means for your portfolio

The uncertainty has led to short-term declines in both equity and bond markets, and most portfolios have seen some fall in value this month and in the year to date. This is a normal market reaction to geopolitical shocks — especially those involving global energy supply.  However, as portfolios are diversified across different types of assets, current falls are somewhat less than in equity markets alone.

It’s important to recognise the bigger picture:

  • Portfolios remain in healthy positive territory over the last 6 months, 12 months and longer periods.
  • Recent market moves reflect sentiment, not a deterioration in the underlying global economy.
  • Energy price spikes have contributed to volatility, but these do not automatically lead to long-lasting market declines.
  • Your portfolio remains well-diversified, and this is exactly the kind of environment diversification is designed to navigate.

Why we are holding firm

At this stage, we do not believe it’s in your best interests for us to make kneejerk changes or to crystallise positions. Periods like this often prove temporary, and history shows that markets tend to recover well before the political situation itself fully resolves.

We are therefore maintaining our current positioning while we wait to see:

  • whether the US acts on its threat, and
  • whether this marks a turning point towards negotiations rather than escalation.

If the situation changes materially, or if the conflict were to become genuinely prolonged, we would of course review our stance and adjust portfolios accordingly. But based on what we know today, remaining invested and staying disciplined is the most sensible approach.

Final thoughts

Geopolitical events can be unsettling, but they are not new and markets have navigated similar episodes many times before. Your portfolio has been built to weather exactly this kind of uncertainty.  We are monitoring developments very closely and will keep you updated as the situation evolves.
